Sphero Star Wars BB-8 Droid Review

The BB-8 resembles a small ball of the size of orange. It measures just 4.5 inches tall (its head included) and is 2.9 inches wide. It looks like a droid from any movie trailer, albeit its much smaller. It sports similar grey and orange patterns and details down to a tee. It appears authentic like something from a galaxy far away! Sphero Star Wars BB-8 Droid

The head (about the size of a half golf ball) stays on a much larger sphere due to weak collection of magnets. As per Sphero Star Wars BB-8 Droid Review, its head constantly falls off as it starts roaming and ramming into baseboard heaters, chairs, walls and pretty much anything else. This can be bit annoying at times.

The toy gets pretty dirty at times. Its head uses two small wheels in tandem with magnet to glide around the spheroid body, and its wheels get packed with dirt. You can clean them easily. So it’s important for you to keep your floors immaculate, or BB-8 will pick up dust, debris, and hair.

According to Sphero Star Wars BB-8 Droid Review, when its head actually stays on, it isn’t busy cleaning floors. It’s just a fun gizmo and its body is surprisingly sturdy and it won’t break easily even with regular bumps.

You can easily avoid stairs and numerous other obstacles by controlling BB-8 yourself. Just download free Sphero BB-8 app from the Apple App Store or Google Play and pair it with iPhone, iPad or any Android device.

You can charge BB-8’s battery by placing it on an induction base. This base also doubles up as its display stand. Its base blinks continuously while charging and may glow solid blue once it’s fully charged. It may take about 3 hours to charge the droid to full power and it provides an hours of usage time.

App and Features

After using the app to pair the BB-8 with your device you can scroll through various options: Message, Drive, Settings, and Patrol.

By tapping drive, you can easily pilot the BB-8 manually. The virtual interface is quite similar to any video game controller that comes with dual joysticks. The right joystick will orient the front of the droid in the direction you want to go, and the left stick can move and steer. With some practice, you can drive around in graceful circles. There’s a dash button in the right corner to enable you to drive around in graceful circles. It also boosts speed to help overcome bumps in partitions, carpets, or other small obstacles. There’s a reverse button on its left corner which helps you back the BB-8 up.

Patrol is another driving feature that allows Sphero BB-8 Droid to go up and do some exploration on its own, and it also helps it adapt to its surroundings. In settings, you’ll find many options to tinker with. UI sounds allows you to the toggle user interface sound effects on or off. There are beeps and boops you might hear while BB-8 is moving around, though actual unit makes only clicking and whirring sounds. They can be turned on or off, under Droid Sounds. It’s also possible to enable, or disable use of metric units that only pertain to Patrol mode. You can know the distance it has traveled through the app.
